In democracy, when the state forms the rules for us, they also need to specify the intentions behind that rule-making. When there is an ambiguity in these intentions, it is natural for the individual interpretations to rise and lead to conflicts.
Democracy, Autonomy and Identity Politics!
“Identity politics is a political style and ideology that focuses on the issues relevant to various groups defined by a wide variety of shared personal characteristics, including, but not limited to, race, religion, sex, gender, ethnicity, ideology, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, culture, shared history, medical conditions, and other of the many ways in which people differ from each other, and into which they may be classified or classify themselves.”
It refers to the individual interpretations of various social norms existing today in the society, which by and large is the reason behind the upheaval of major conflicts in India. We being one of the largest democracy in the world along with prevailing diversity in terms of religion, culture, ethnicity, region and various other factors, are immensely affected by this kind of school of politics.
